Hilton Head Island’s Untold History

The Story of John Bayley
Today Hilton Head Island has over 22 neighborhoods and 40,000+ permanent residents with a booming tourist economy, but this explosion is relatively recent.
Hilton Head Island’s history records trace back to 1698 when it was a land untouched and unused – so remote that even the original owner never stepped foot on the island.
The first person to ever own Hilton Head Island was Lord John Bayley of Tipperary County, Ireland, though despite owning the entire Island until his death until 1722 – he never set foot on this beautiful land. The land was a gift for supporting the Lords Proprietors of Carolina, who were stimulating a settlement of the province outside of Charleston. They had awarded large grants of lands who helped them in any commercial endeavors.
When menswear store owner, Jeff Kurtz, sought out to name his men’s clothing store, he wanted to honor the local history of Hilton Head. A lesser-known name, we imagine that John Bayley was a man of distinction and would have liked the beauty of where we call home.
